Artis is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, and the only zoo in Amsterdam. Artis is located on the Plantage Kerklaan in Amsterdam-Centrum.
The Artis Zoo was founded in 1838 by a society named Natura Artis Magistra, which had set itself the noble goal of educating the wider public on the current knowledge of natural history. Originally consisting only of a few parrots, The Artis zoological collection quickly grew into a real zoo during the first decades of its existence
Artis houses a large collection of live animals representative of all species of the animal kingdom. Artis also has several smaller museums, restaurants, playgrounds and activities for children on the premises.
In recent years a lot of the old Artis buildings and structures have been renovated and modernized to allow more space for the animals kept at the zoo.
