De Wallen is the neighbourhood in the centre of Amsterdam commonly referred to as the Red Light District.
Although Amsterdam has several other smaller red light districts, De Wallen is traditionally the most famous prostitution neighbourhood in Europe. Prostitution has been part of the street view in this area at least since the 15th century.
De Wallen is also one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam, close to where the city originated in the 13th century. The oldest building in Amsterdam - De Oude Kerk - is also located on De Wallen.
