De Hallen

De Hallen Amsterdam

De HallenDe Hallen is a centre for culture, food and shopping, located on the Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam West. The area now known as De Hallen was created out of a former public transport depot.

The complex of industrial buildings and open spaces was rebuilt into a spacious cultural compound, combining a cinema (filmhallen), a public library with café, a large hall of food stands and small restaurants (foodhallen), and a variety of fashion and design shops (Hannie Dankbaarpassage).

Tram depot

De Hallen was the result of a municipal project aimed at renovating and reorienting the monumental old and abandoned Tollenstraat tram depot.

The original building was erected in the early twentieth century and originally functioned as a repair shop and maintenance depot for the first electric trams riding through Amsterdam. The building was utilised by the Amsterdam municipal transport company until 1996.

After years of disuse and a some arguing between administrators and local residents about it's future purposes, the complex were was reopened in its new form in 2014.
