PC Hooftstraat

The PC Hoofstraat is a 300 meter long shopping avenue located in Amsterdam Zuid.

The PC Hooftstraat is reputed to be the most expensive and chic shopping area in the Netherlands, populated mainly by international luxury fashion brands.

The PC Hooftstraat is located close to the Museumplein, where most of the larger musea in the city can be found, such as the Stedelijk, Rijks- and van Gogh Museum

History

The PC Hooftstraat was originally constructed around the end of the nineteenth century and started out as an ordinary residential area with a few small local shops. It was named after Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, a famous Dutch sixteenth century writer and poet.

It wasn't until the second half of the twentieth century that luxury shops slowly began moving to the PC Hooftstraat from the Kalverstraatand the area started its slow transformation into a luxury shopping street. As the rents started rising, more of the old neighbourhood shops were forced to make way for international renowned luxury fashion brands.

Nowadays the street is solely the domain of high end luxury shops and brands such as Gucci, Dior, Vuitton, D&G, Cartier and Valentino.
