The Movies is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam. It is located on the Haarlemmerstraat in the centre of Amsterdam.
The Movies is situated is situated in a seventeenth century building, which opened as a cinema named Tavenu in 1912. Much of the original art-deco interior of the early days has been preserved, which is part of this small theatre's distinctive charm.
Up unto the seventies the location was named Cinema Hollandia untill a new owner renamed the location to "The Movies" in 1971. After several successful years the opportunity arose to buy two buildings next door, so that The Movies could expand.
The Movies now has four screens, a bar and a restaurant serving food inspired by the Indonesian cuisine.
