Tassenmuseum Hendrikje a.k.a. the "Amsterdam Museum of Bags and Purses" is situated in a monumental mansion on the Herengracht in the centre of Amsterdam.
Visitors of the Amsterdam Museum of bags and purses can explore the history of the "purse" in European culture from late medieval times to the present day. As a museum specialised in this subject matter "Tassenmuseum Hendrikje" is unique worldwide.
History of the Tassenmuseum
Tassenmuseum Hendrikje started as a private collection of the founders Hendrikje en Heinz Ivo, who built their collection of purses and bags by visiting antique markets around Europe. In 1996 their collection had become diverse and historic enough to share it with the rest of the world.
They first opened their Amstelveen house as a small museum in 1996, and in 2007 the museum moved to the impressive 17th century canal house formerly functioning as mayor's residence at the Herengracht in Amsterdam.
The museum currently houses more than 5000 bags, purses, pouches, suitcases and wallets of diverse materials, designs and cultural and historic contexts, representative both of the current state of the art and 500 years of European history of this branch of design and craftsmanship.
